We need these YouTube features

3 YouTube features to help creators.

Hi,

I think one of the coolest parts about using technology is realizing in real time the absence of features you wish existed.

I see it happening in my day to day and constantly find myself wishing I had the contact information of engineers at Apple, Spotify, YouTube, Instagram, etc to pitch them on ideas.

I’ve been thinking a lot about YouTube recently (it’s probably my favorite platform) and a few features I wish existed.

I thought it’d be fun to share them and instead of just complaining about things I wish existed lol, share a few YouTube resources that might be helpful.

This newsletter highlights:

  • YouTube hacks I wish existed

  • Artist Marketing Workshop hosted by myself and Drew De Leon

  • Resources for those affected by the California wildfires

  • 10 music industry job roles

Let’s dive in ⬇️

Before diving into a few things I wish existed, I thought it’d be worth sharing a few things that could potentially be helpful to artists, creators, and their teams.

YouTube recently officially partnered with a platform called repurpose.io that helps automatically repurpose existing content from TikTok, IG, etc onto YouTube Shorts as well as distribute content to multiple platforms at once.

Instead of having to worry about manually posting on each platform individually, repurpose will let you repurpose…in one place.

YouTube’s official partnership also offers 3 months free of charge.

2) A/B Test YouTube Thumbnails

YouTube now offers the ability to A/B test YouTube thumbnails directly on platform. Within a video’s settings, you can upload multiple thumbnails.

After some time using multiple thumbnails and engaging in the A/B test feature, YouTube will provide data on which thumbnail performed better and automatically show that thumbnail to the majority of people.

This is especially important for creators (ie vloggers, YouTubers, podcasts, etc). Variations can include slight changes in text placement, font, color, and more but the tool lets you see which performs better.

Created by Mr. Beast and his team, ViewStats gives users an in-depth look at almost any channel’s analytics.

Here’s an example of Mr. Beast’s analytics:

The platform shows in-depth analytics on other channels including estimated revenue, how many views per hour, day, month, etc specific videos are generating, how many subscribers the channel is gaining per set period of time, and more.

It’s a great tool not only for channels to gain more insight into their own analytics but their competition as well.

Now let’s get to things I wish existed…

Organizing videos into folders within Creator Studio

Earlier this week I found myself uploading multiple different kinds of content onto one channel and thought it’d be super useful to be able to organize uploads by categories in Creator Studio.

The functionality kind of exists by creating a playlist but it’s not really the same thing - especially for a media channel that has many different kinds of content, it would be awesome to be able to quickly view folders or categories of specific shows, podcasts, different kinds of content, etc on the same channel.

It would be an easy way to look at all of the thumbnails for those on the backend (you can theoretically search for these by using the filter but assigning categories would be easier).

I could see this being especially helpful for big network channels like COMPLEX, Barstool, GoodTalk, etc.

Instagram story view integration

I’ve wanted this for years…but think it would be huge if there was a native functionality to be able to share YouTube videos directly to IG stories, specific the time stamp that appears / plays within the story, and have story views of that content count toward views on YouTube.

The process as it stands is a little fragmented - users have to create a snippet of a video outside of YouTube, share it on Instagram stories as a swipe up, link to the video, and then hope that people not only click on the story but actually click play when brought to the video.

A new integration could help make the process easier all around as well as amplify videos.

Workstation within YouTube

While YouTube is about publishing videos and sort of the “end result” in the content distribution pipeline (since it’s being uploaded), what happens to all of the work beforehand?

I would love for YouTube to acquire a company like frame.io and integrate a video editing workspace into its platform - what if you could edit, share feedback, finalize, and publish a video all in one place?

Frame.io has the ability to leave comments on videos for feedback, test different formats, and more as a workspace solution for video projects.

YouTube acquiring a platform like this (or building its own) could help streamline the video creation process and continue to give the company value and leverage.

Thanks for reading, until next time.

Sign up for the Artist Marketing Playbook 2025 on 2/16

Are you an artist, manager, or someone looking to learn more about music marketing?

We made this for you…I’m partnering up with my good friend and music industry colleague Drew De Leon, The Digilogue, and Grouped to present the Artist Marketing Playbook 2025.

The 3 hour workshop is not only an educational resource (it covers single + album rollout best practices, social media optimization, strategies for building your career, & more) but is also for a good cause - 15% of proceeds will be donated to MusiCares to support those affected by the LA fires and will be matched by Grouped.

Drew & I have a combined more than 15 years of music marketing experience and have worked with artists like Rod Wave, Lil Durk, That Mexican OT, T-Pain, & more. We’re excited to connect with everyone and share our knowledge.

One of the things I’m most excited about in the workshop is how we build an artist from scratch and show you the playbook of marketing them. From streaming platform strategy, social media best practices, & more, it’s all there.

Looking forward to seeing you this Sunday.
